Traditionally, bicycles have been looked upon as inanimate objects which are under the control of humans. Human energy and power drives bicycles. And until now, bicycles have been nothing more than vehicles, a thing that rolls when pedaled but stops and falls when stationary.
As more people around the world take to cycling for health, fitness, transportation and environmental concerns, designers have begun to look at bikes differently. They have started to see bicycles as having potential to do more than just roll along the ground.
An example of this can be seen in a recent award winning bicycle design which featured an air purifier. The bike in question has a handlebar-mounted air filter as well as a photosynthesis-like system which can generate oxygen from a reaction with water and electricity from the lithium-ion battery that powers the bike.
